Tech Terms?

It would be helpful to have a page where we could go to read definitions/ descriptions of this new vocab that we're learning regarding technology. For instance: What is the difference between a browser and a search engine? A Wiki and a website? A blog and 'Chatzy'?

I have tried to put together a Venn diagram or something which shows which terms are similar to which, but it's difficult when you don't know the language (when you're an immigrant not a native to use Rebecca's terms).

Could you help us with this?

  1. Hi Lauren,

I searched the web for a good glossary and have found none yet, but I have four suggestions.

    1) Use wikipedia.org to find definitions and explanations.

    2) Use google.com. Type define: term and you will get back a list of definitions. For example, I typed "define: browser" and got back a list of definitions. I picked this.

Browser: A web browser is a software application for retrieving, presenting, and traversing information resources on the World Wide Web. ...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Browser_(Web)

    3) You could start a class glossary. If this interests you, add a page to our class wiki. As you and others in the class come across terms, definitions and explanations, add them to the glossary. If you find a good list, use that to develop the page. Just be sure to cite the source at the bottom of the page. If you need help adding the page, let me know, and I'll coach you.

Remind me at our next session, and you can tell the class about the project. However, if we are lucky, they will read this comment and start adding to the page before our next session. You could also add it to our Chatzy chat room conversation.

    4) Terry Freeman edited a free electronic introduction to Web 2.0. There is a short glossary in that, but also lots of articles that go into more depth about the terms. You can preview (it takes a few minutes to load) and download it here -> http://www.box.net/shared/zkdgoz6a8q. Just cut and paste the url into your browser.

You can find out more about Terry here -> http://terry-freedman.org.uk/artman/publish/index.php.

Terry also has another free electronic book on Web 2.0 Projects that you can preview and download here -> http://www.box.net/shared/dffk3r2ppn.

Let me know if this helps with your "information retrieval" needs.

    Dennis
